Job Summary

To develop and effectively implement policies and strategies to minimise risk and improve merchandise controls throughout TJX Europe Companies. Provide high-level advice and guidance on all regulatory issues, raise awareness and compliance across all divisions of TJX Europe Companies through effective Risk Management programmes.


Key Responsibilities


Plan, develop and implement policies across all divisions of TJX Europe Companies to raise the profile and understanding of Merchandise Risk and establish it as a fundamental consideration in the commercial decision-making processes.

• Develop, implement and maintain product policies, guidance and procedures for buyers, vendors, merchandise co-ordinators and processing centre associates across all divisions to ensure legislative compliance.

• Effectively communicate EU corporate policy, procedures, arrangements and merchandise risk strategies across all divisions of TJX Europe and TJX Corporation relating to EU imports.

• Identify, research and risk assess the impact of new legislation across the EU, provide reports and work with the Head of the Legal, Buying Directors and Buying Managers to implement suitable solutions.

• Plan, develop and deliver an effective Merchandise Risk/Trading Standards service and ensure all products supplied by TJX Europe Companies are in compliance with EU legislation and policy objectives.

• Provide a strategic consultancy service to Buying Directors/Managers, Buyers, Vendors, Store Operations and Legal Teams across all divisions of TJX Europe Companies to support and achieve compliance with all relevant EU trading standards legislation.

• Manage, guide and develop the merchandise Compliance Business Partners to ensure the effective delivery of the Merchandise Compliance service across all divisions of TJX Europe Companies.

• Develop and maintain strong effective cross-functional business partnerships across all divisions of TJX Europe Companies and work with Stakeholders to raise compliance and facilitate solutions in High Risk areas.

• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current Product legislation and current case law ensuring advances consideration is given to changes that may affect the current and planned buying strategy and its impact on the TJX Europe Companies.

• Develop educational programmes, provide specialist training, materials and advice to Buying Managers, Buyers, Merchandise Co-ordinators and other relevant parts of the business to ensure legislative compliance throughout all TJX Europe Companies.

• Produce reports for Senior Management to highlight high risk issues and recommend appropriate actions.

• Identify and implement appropriate methods of product testing to ensure merchandise supplied by TJX Europe Companies is compliant with applicable EU legislation.

• Develop and implement an effective process to ‘Stop Press’ and Recall products that may present a risk to the business across all TJX Europe Companies.

• Effectively manage ‘Stop Presses’ and product Recalls across all TJX Europe Companies and work with Senior Management to develop/implement appropriate controls to minimise risk/exposure and prevent similar future occurrences.

• Work with and support our Legal teams across all TJX Europe Companies to effectively manage IP/Brand issues and minimise risk/exposure.

• Develop our UK Primary Authority relationship, manage enforcement challenges across all TJX Europe Companies and provide analysis of causes and outcomes to prevent recurrence.

• Develop and implement an Age-Restricted Products policy for all TJX Europe Companies to ensure sales of age-restricted products are made in accordance with applicable laws and limit the risk/exposure.

• Work with and support the Customer Services and Insurance Claims departments to bring difficult customer complaints to a satisfactory conclusion.

• Create an effective succession plan for the Merchandise Risk/Trading Standards service to ensure we meet current and future organisational needs.

• Represent the TJX Europe Companies on key retail/industry groups to stay abreast of current best practice and industry trends, and recommend action as appropriate.


Key Skills, Knowledge & Experience


Experience of fast paced Retail environment a distinct advantage

• Up to date working knowledge of EU Trading Standards and Consumer Law

• Strong influencing skills at a senior level

• Able to Manage Risk through commercial decision making

• Proven ability in implementation of process and procedures

• Management of small teams of specialists
